Her story

Change is very common with woman around the world, you know why? Because they are most adaptive and not afraid of change, whatsoever. If we turn the pages of history (however this blog is not about men, but women so it should be called as “herstory”) we see some of these strong women gave us new fashion trends, our favorite toys, and some helped us reach space even, many others fought for their rights and changed the way people think about women.

Although in my opinion it’s not only one single day but the woman should be celebrated each day because of not only reasons I gave above but because they deserve it. I can say it with my experience because there have been many women in my life right from my dear mommy to my sister, to my girlfriend, to my girl-friends, to my wife and many more who made me what I am today (keep reading my blogs and someday you’ll read about all the present and gone woman of my life-just comment below to let me know if you are interested to read about it

On this international women’s day, I am writing about some rejoiced ones who touched and changed many lives and have made a mark in society.

How many of you played with dolls? Remember the Barbie? Lovely! Who invented it? And why? Of course, you can find the information on Google or for that matter on ChatGPT these days. No .. No … Don’t go anywhere, I’ll tell you 😉

Ruth Handler (1916-2002), an American inventor created the iconic Barbie doll in 1959, named after her daughter Barbara. The inspiration behind creating these dolls was her daughter and her friends. She realized kids use paper dolls to imagine roles and play. Seeing this, she wanted to make a better doll to facilitate their dreams. The premiere of first Barbie was at a toy fair in March of 1959. It became overnight sensation by selling over 350,000 units alone in the first year only.

In her autobiography she wrote, “My own philosophy of Barbie was that through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be. Barbie always represented the fact that a woman had choices.” … Isn’t that amazing!

Just like Barbie looks beautiful in all her different clothing, each woman also looks elegant when she dresses up. Now when we are talking about dressing up how can we forget the world famous brand “Chanel.” Let’s talk about it a little.

Gabrielle (Coco) Chanel (1883-1971) grew up in a convent with strict discipline. One day she got a hold of a series of romance novels, and she loved everything about it. Especially the elegance of costumes, sets, make-up. It made her think, now at this stage she wanted to become an actress. She took the stage name Coco and started acting. As luck would have it, Etienne Balsan, a young man who enjoyed her performance on the stage, invited her to stay in his nearby chateau.

Gabrielle accepted the offer and one day she came across Balsan’s clothes. She started wearing a mix of ‘his and her’ clothes just like his open collared t-shirts and flannel coat, paired with some of her clothes with a man’s straw boater hat. This innovation caused a new kind of attention. People soon started consulting her for fashion tips. She opened her first studio in Deauville, France. Ladies had such craze of her hats that by 1920 she had become one of the leading fashion designers in the world and the greatest trendsetter of her time. Her clothes have come to represent confident, provocative, and ever so slightly rebellious kind of woman.

That sure is a much dose of fashion. But women are not only fashion, but they are also bright minds too. They have especially made a mark in space and space science. Remember the movie ‘Hidden Figures’. Well, I am not going to tell you the story, you can watch it yourself on any of the OTT platforms. However now, I’d like to tell you about Moumita Dutta.

Sure, you know about the missile man of India! Now is the time for you to know about a woman without whom India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM-as they say) wasn’t possible.

“How lucky those people are to have the opportunity to be a part of this”, thought Moumita after reading about India’s first lunar probe, Chandrayaaan-1, in Anandbazaar Patrika in 2004 in Kolkata. And see what her hard work brought to her in 2015, she became one of the top scientists, part of the team that worked on India’s much celebrated Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) or Mangalyaan.

She was awarded with the ISRO Team of Excellence Award for her excellent contribution to Mangalyan Mission.

Thrilled? … Well, there are yet many other women who have made a difference in our lives, like Kiran mazumdar Shaw, Falguni Nayar, Roshni Nadar Malhotra, Madhabi Puri, and Soma Mandal are to name a few. However, I won’t be able to write about all of them, yet I am sure you guys will read about them on other platforms.

This is small gratitude to leading ladies in our lives who are making ‘his’tory turn to ‘her-story’.

  1. Loved how you elaborated on the various examples and how they play a role in today’s inspiration for women. I think they would inspire young minds to be encouraged to reach for the skies. I would have loved a disclaimer about the not so great strategies used by some of the examples like Barbie and/or Chanel. Goes without saying the the number of good examples far far outnumber the not so good ones.
    Keep writing and keep inspiring.
